Unusual barrel markings

3 posts in this topic

I saw a Johnson rifle recently that appeared to be pretty much original and correct per Bruce Canfield's book except for the markings on the barrel. The top of the barrel was marked "1481 A" instead of "30.06". The same number was stamped on the bottom of the lug on the bottom of the barrel. The Netherlands "Scimiter and I" was stamped in a circle on the bottom of the barrel just forward of the lug. A "J" was stamped just forward of the Netherlands marking. The markings did not look like the barrel had been refinished. The barrel was parkerized and appeared old. It had the correct front sight and bayonet lug, each set into a step in the barrel. The rifle S/N was 3014.

Is this an original barrel with an odd marking or a replacement barrel?

You have an original JSAR barrel. The ".30-06" is stamped on the barrel collar, not on the barrel. The number of the barrel and locking collar for your rifle was originally 1801 E.

Thanks, Bob!

I bought this rifle recently at a gun show. Is there any way to find out what other parts were originally in this firearm?

Thanks, Pete Dursin
