  1. Jay, absolutely no doubt. A cool gun to have and definitely a show stopper at the range. If it shoots half as well as it looks, it will be unbeatable.Enjoy for sure.
  2. IMHO, those markings are neither a stamping nor a roll mark, which the originals definitely are.. They are engraved. And, to cap it off, the city of Providence is misspelled. As they say. The Devil is in the details. You be the judge. I am sorry, but I kept waiting for someone else to notice that minor detail, and I just could not wait any longer, It kept slapping me in the face each and every time I looked at the image. ArtR
  3. As I told OP, a JSAR rifle with SN 2179 left the Johnson Automatics factory 12/03/1941 as a standard JSAR in .30-06. As I have no knowledge as to what, where, and when happened when this DROR was assembled, I cannot attest as to how or what possessed them to use SN 2179. I find it both confusing and deceptive to 'remark' the receiver as they have done, which in fact implies this rifle was assembled and manufactured by Johnson Automatics in Providence, R.I. While photos do not prove it, I did not see any of the standard Johnson patent or trademarks registrations. Others may want to chime in, but I would tend to leave further discussion regarding this to others more qualified in such matters.
  4. Just keep in mind. Even though a "sporter", it is still a JSAR, and shoots and functions like one, and regardless, will be the center of attention at any range.
  5. Hi JAG2955 Welcome to the forum. The Miltech site shows $2895 as their price, plus any price you pay for the rifle and any subsequent shipping/insurance, but you will want to contact them directly to find out exactly what to expect.. If you could locate the required parts and either a competent gunsmith or DIY, you might be able to do the job for less. ArtR
  6. I too have watched people let their memberships lapse and others who have refused to join just because of reports of abuse by senior leaders in the NRA. I can only hope that the current board wakes up and considers the almost 20% drop in membership in the short term past. The NRA cannot afford nor support such a drastic drop in membership support. Maybe they are finally seeing the handwriting on the wall. We need a strong and cohesive board to survive this. We also need all the fine contributors to he NRA magazines to continue the fight in print, as we know for certain the mainstream media will not publish anything in support of the 2A. I look forward to a better and healthier 2024 and beyond.
  7. The following information is provided from the production logs: Receiver SN 2179, Received From: Cranston Arms, Date Received 12/02/1941, Stock No. none, Barrel No. 1630E, Hammer Block No. 3795, Hammer No. 3197, Bolt No. 3662, Locking Cam No. 1652, Firing Pin No.4075, Extractor No. 3384, Magazine No. 0702, Disposition Date 12/3/1941, Transferred to J.A. Inc - N.P.C Without proper and reliable provenance, be very careful about any claims of both ownership and usage. Also, if you would like forum members to comment about the condition of the rifle, please post high definition, quality photos showing all rifle views, and any suspected defects. Generally, photos taken with cell phones or quality cameras produce large files. If you crop the photos to the rifle in general, and scale the photos so the size is less than 2MB, uploading should work well, and the resulting photos will give reviewers enough detail to comment. As is stated at the bottom of the 'reply screen', just either drag files to the 'paperclip icon' or use the 'choose files..." option, which allows your to navigate to where you photos saved. Once there, select all that you want to attach, and then press okay or open.
  8. I agree a complete rifle, however, considering the probable final price, I would ask for more detailed, better lighting, and higher resolution photos. This is not too much to ask for considering the money that this item will command. Also includes what appears to be a nice 1917 sling, which could also be confirmed with an imprint image. The buttstock does have a plugged "recoil stop screw hole", but other than that, sort of looks original. Better photos sure would help.
  9. Phil ... you might have to start charging admission to your splendid man cave.
  10. Oooooo.....I might be able to look at a real LMG...hee hee
  11. Rarebearcat: I am not sure if you have had a chance to disassemble the rifle, but if and when you get a chance. check for SN's for all the parts listed that are on the rifle compared to parts that shipped. If you list them all, we could possibly check those SN's to the other possible rifle SN 8295. Any one possible match to 8296 or 8295 might help zero in on what last digit really is. My normal 'edit tricks' failed to bring out a definitive answer.
  12. Merry Christmas to one and all from a 'snowless' Vermont. Crazy for sure.
  13. SN was 0776 There is or was a rifle with SN 0776 A cursory review of "the book" did not show 0776. Closest nbr's 0775 & 0780
  14. Hi Brent and welcome to the forum. While B3142 is a sporter, after checking it out, it still should be a good shooter and an item of conversation at the range. The sporter stock has some really nice wood, and from what we could see from the photos, metal does not look too bad either. If you have not already purchased 'the book" it is highly recommended as it will answer a lot of questions and is a good accessory to the gun. It is available directly from the author, on Amazon and numerous other sites. Enjoy.

  16. Well, looking for odd caliber brass, for my cousin, has been very interesting. Even 6MM Rem fetches a premium, if you can find it. .300Savage, .35 Remington, .32 Win Special...all extremely hard to find and quite pricey. Browse most reloading sites and lots of "out of stock" banners on searches. Many 'no backorder'. Another way to take guns away. No ammo or reloading supplies. Primers are outrageous if you can find them, and powder is headed that way.

  21. Torrey, I told him "Most of us serious JSAR collectors will want to know this before entertaining a bid. That is why most listings will clearly show the MFG imprint area complete with the SN.' Did the same to that second NO SN listing.
  22. Another SN 4882 Buy the gun, not the story.
  23. NO SN Sporter on GB. I will see if I can get seller to divulge.
  24. Strange....had 13 days originally and a decent BIN price, ended with no bids. But noticed listing said it was on consignment, so maybe it was sold in house??
  25. Indeed. Shooting with good eyesight and iron sights at a distance is fun, just with an M14/M1A is more so. Probably any M1A would be fine. It is just that I am partial to longer barrels, and the Super Match had some really nice and enjoyable features. The added weight from the heavy barrel and oversize stock dampened felt recoil. The match sights and 2 stage trigger really helped improve accuracy. We did all our VT State Rifle NRA matches at the VTANG CEATS (Camp Ethan Allen Training Site) Firing range in Jericho Center, VT. CEATS is a huge facility with numerous KD (known distance) ranges for pistol, small bore, biathlon, rifle, and also tank and aircraft gun ranges. The Army Mountain Warfare school is there as well. We normally shot NRA matches on Range 4-1, which at 600 yds had the 200, 300, & 600 yd positions, as well as 100 & 500 yds. If you go to Google Earth or Google Maps, and zoom in around the Nashville Rd-West Bolton area, you currently can see an image of a match being fired on range 4-1 from the 200 yd line. The CEATS facility is also in a mountainous area, which creates all sorts of wind issues at distance. The 1000 yard range (KD 6-3) only had a few shooing points, as it was located on one of the tank ranges, and was sort of reserved for USAMU snipers. I only shot the 1000 yard range once and then only by invitation. Those target centers are 45" and are very small at that distance. Shooting 1000 yards takes reading the wind to a whole new level. I measured a USA Mid-Range (MR) target that is used at 600 yds, and it is 64"x72". I cannot find the full dimensions for the 1000 yd targets.
