  1. Gorilla glue expands a lot, so you have to stay on top of cleaning it off as it oozes out.
  2. There is also a "flexible" super glue I have used with good results. It dries as strong, but has a little give to it, so it isn't so brittle.
  3. I don't even know how to respond to this...
  4. I couldn't figure out how to delete this post after realizing there was a thread on this already, so: JSAR (GB #213331068) went for $7526.00. Nice rifle. Seems like the recession is over.... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=213331068
  5. So, does the batch with no production info mean they weren't transferred to the NPC? Still unlikely it is a USMC rifle, but I would guess any weapon included in the Netherlands contract would be recorded. I wonder where it spent its youth....
  6. I have one in the herd that crushes the brass big time. I am guessing it is a weak spring, but haven't gotten around to replacing it. The rest have no problems, but truth be told I do love my Garands (blasphemy?).
  7. Obviously, this is a true USMC rifle captured by the Japanese and refurbished with a Type-11 LMG barrel before being recaptured by a Marine and subsequently smuggled home in his duffle bag.
  8. You gents forgot to mention that the stuff is non-toxic/non-corrosive. You can flush it. I actually bought a 10' PVC pipe and soaked a WWI German cavalry lance and it came out like new. One caution, don't leave things soaking too long (weeks, months) or it dries into a goo. I forgot a buttplate in a container and it was cemented to the bottom.
  9. It is .30-06. I will try and post some pics.
  10. I have a Johnson barrel off a sporterized rifle. It has been cut down so the front sight mounts where the bayonet lug should be (about 2" off). Is this a Winfield modification, or Bubba's?
  11. Gents, I stumbled across another and couldn't leave it, but after careful financial consideration I've decided I don't need five JSARs. This is a Winfield rifle. Blued, not parked. Winfield wood, not Johnson, but it is a nice looking rifle (or I wouldn't have bought it). Has a nice full length Johnson barrel with a beautiful bore and the bayo lug (some Winfield sporters have a shorter barrel with no bayonet lug). I am posting here first before I put it on a table at a show. Asking $3000. Email for more photos. R/Matt
  12. Joe, I picked up a severely bubba'd rifle a year or so ago (well worth the price in parts) which has been crudely fashioned to take a box magazine. I think it might be a candidate for a LMG look-alike, but I have no interest in it. Are you still using a dial-up internet connection? If not I'd like to send you some pictures and get you opinion as to whether or not it can be salvaged.
  13. Not bad for a parts or restoration. The wood is a bad replacement... what a terrible fit.
  14. JSAR bayonet on eBay. Coated in something. Originally, from the pictures, I thought it had melted! Seller calls it "original protective coating." I don't know if it is rubber or cosmoline, but the scabbard is numbered, so did the Dutch coat the bayonet for storage? Bayonet on eBay
  15. Rick, Good insights. I didn't doubt the bayonet is real. I have two (but need two more). Just haven't seen one before in cosmoline. R/Matt
  16. Rifles were produced in serial number blocks. The first run had no letter prefixes in front of the numbers, the second run were "A" prefix, the third run "B"....... Yours is close to the middle of the "B" production run (but that doesn't mean it didn't sit in a bin with all the others and got pulled at random).
  17. Take a closer look at the serial number. Does it look like it could be a "B"? There are no "R" receivers. It could be a light strike, or if the rifle has been refinished, the bottom of the B could be buffed off.
  18. I'm curious to know what the other Holy Grail item is..... Also, are you anywhere near Windsor ON?
  19. Mr Scott, I tried to access your website without success. I need to order a few items, and a DVD. Can you post, email, or PM me with contact info? Thanks. Matt
  20. Well, I guess you gents have a few years on me, but I bought my first in 2005 driving home from the National Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio. I stopped in a Cabela's on the drive home and found one for just under $2k. A year later Cabela's was selling the another for $6k. I have toyed every year with the idea of shooting one in the John C. Garand match instead of an M1.
  21. I actually find it cooler that your rifle isn't listed as going to the NPC! Is it in military configuration or sporterized? Any thing unusual about it? R/Matt
  22. I don't know about anybody else, but I can't tell anything from the second picture. Take the butt plate off and describe to us the holes that you see. The laminate pieces are much more common (in my experience) than finding a stock without them. I suppose the laminated piece could shrink more than the rest of the stock over 60+ years leaving the gap, but I can't really get a feel for it based on the photos.
  23. Boy, is my face red. I am emphatically stating for the record that I didn't take a good look at it! Missed all the demerits. The quick glance at the bogus marks was enough for me to move on without taking a hard look.
  24. The rifle itself is good, minus the compensator, which is a Johnson product, but not original to the rifle. The proof marks are BOGUS. One of the rifles I own actually has one, too. Some guy wanting to show USMC "provenance". Looks like a nice rifle, though.
  25. Somebody on the Gun Boards posted a couple of links to a newly made movie on the post-war Chinese civil war. One side is equipped with a lot of GI lend-lease stuff. There is one guy toting a JSAR. Anybody know how many are floating around the Chinese version of Hollywood? Link
