  1. Now that we have to wait for moderator validation for our posts to show up (It took me three posts to figure out what was going on!), I'm wondering if there isn't some better way. Perhaps the registration process could be more stingent?
  2. I just viewed this collection. I am feeling very inadequate right now.
  3. Is there a link to this auction somewhere?
  4. I must have bad eyes! Forget the crack, the wood is 1/2"-3/4" light around the middle, too. And yet, this isn't the worst bubba job I've seen.
  5. The gun is waaaaay too much for a restoration. Note also the badly cracked stock.
  6. Came across a paragraph in a book called "Armies Without Nations..." and there is a paragraph where the author states the "Nicaraguan government paid $154,500 to a private dealer, Western Arms of Los Angeles, for five hundred Danish-made Madsen submachine guns and one thousand Belgian automatic pistols, as well as a sample order of one hundred U.S.-made Johnson automatic rifles, plus two million rounds of ammunition." Anybody heard this before?
  7. What is the recommended oil for treating JSAR wood? Thanks. Matt
  8. The rough metal is OK, but I would like to see a better picture of the writing stamped on the top of the receiver. From the photo it does look a little weak. Is the rifle as dark as the pictures show? The close-up doesn't look like the metal has been reparked, but to my eye the finish looks a little dark. It could just be the photos.
  9. There are various number stamps on the INSIDE of some of the wood pieces, but there were no stamps or marks on the visible parts of the wood. Periodically, you will see some rifles with "P" proof marks on the underside of the grip, BUT these are fakes put on by folks trying to claim some sort of USGI provenance.
  10. Almost had a tank museum at the Detroit Arsenal when they shut the plant down. The coolest exhibit was going to be an actual assembly line with partially completed tanks on it. Rick, Are you at GDLS in Sterling Heights? If so, you are right down the road from me.
  11. This past weekend, at the Michigan Antique Arms Collectors show there was one (non-Miltech) sporting a $9700.00 price tag.
  12. Cabela's Johnson listing The nice thing about Cabela's is their return guarantee. You can send it back if there is a problem. You will only be out your cost to ship it back.
  13. Impressive indeed! There have been several on GB over the last few weeks which didn't go anywhere as high. As I mentioned in another thread, Cabela's has one WITH beyonet for $7k. I always think they are a bit high, but they sell a lot.
  14. Wow! I really don't know what to say. Based on the number of Johnsons made (and those still in original configuration) they SHOULD be that price. There are 5.5 million Garands, 6 million M1 carbines, 1903s, etc. bringing thousands, so I hope they keep going up.
  15. I doubt it. Only the high-end auctions like Rock Island get that much. Even Cabela's has one for less at $6999.00 with a bayonet and it hasn't moved even though it has been posted for months.
  16. Are the T (or P) and A the first two letters? Or where do they fit into the 5-6 letter string? Could it be some previous owners name?
  17. Does your rifle even have a bolt stop? I've found many, if not most, do not. I have 4 rifles, none of them have one.
  18. I am enjoying it so far, but it isn't nearly as well-done as the Civil War series. I did notice in episode 1 (at about the 1 hour, 41 minute mark) the narrator was describing Guadalcanal and how the Marines were armed with older, single shot bolt action rifles while the footage showed a guy cleaning an M1 carbine.
  19. Chester, Do you know for certain your rifle is .30-06? A 7mm Chilean rifle is still marked .30-06 on the top of the receiver and on the front of the locking collar. You can only see the 7mm markings if you remove the barrel. It should be stamped cal. 7mm near the throat end of the barrel.
  20. There is 7mm JSAR on Gunbroker 7mm JSAR. It is SN 4641. When you look at the top of the receiver you will see that somebody has stamped "7 m.m." on it and X'ed out the ".30-06". Maybe it is the picture, but it lookes like it has been reparked to me. It doesn't (to my eye) have that greenish hue.
  21. WTT

Bubba converted it to take a box magazine from the bottom...... I'll send you some pics later today.
  22. WTT

Do you still have the receiver you were looking to swap? I have one that is an ideal candidate for a LMG conversion and you won't be ruining a perfectly good JSAR. R/Matt
  23. Everything but the receiver is up for sale. Parts are well worn, some pitting, the barrel is heavily corroded, etc. Let the craziness begin.
  24. "Nice" original configuration Johnson rifle for $3500 are very hard to come by these days. Not impossible, but you will have to seek it out. Anybody who has one and knows what they are going for is unlikely to part with it for $3500. The online gun auctions may offer you a chance if there are few bidders. I believe one sold a short while ago for $3900. If you have a little give in your price, you may find one. You also never know what turns up at guns shows if you get there early. Good luck.
  25. Spotted two rifles at the Michigan Antique Arms Collector's show today. Both in original configuaration, One in really nice shape for $4500 and one with a lot of wear for $3500. What I did see was a bizarre Boyt leather case for something. It was being sold as a "rare" Johnson case by the seller, but I have my doubts. A JSAR fits in it, but it isn't a tight enough fit to make me think it was designed for a Johnson. Anybody ever see something like this?
