  1. New York says that 50+ year old guns are exempt , but in the next breath includes M1s as assault rifles and , even though M1s have a seven round non-detachable internal mag , they are going after the 8 round enblock clips. As old Ben said , " If we don't hang together , we will all hang separately ." Chris
  2. He did have some health issues , but he was on here ealier today. I'm sure he'll be along. Chris
  3. I believe Numrich still has the two bolt / carrier sections in stock. Just over $100 for the front and around $75 for the rear , IIRC. Chris
  4. Ah , well . On to plan B . Thanks , Joe. Chris
  5. Will these be able to mount on a std. rifle and convert it to use 20 rd mags , then be removable to convert back to normal ? Or will these be only able to fit in a more or less permanant conversion ? I've been trying to connect with a JLMG for several decades but have not been able to get a gun for sale and funds at the same time. I have about 15-20 mags put away from back in the 80's and it would be fun to get a little use out of them if I could. As an aside note , I've been told that the semi-auto sideplates for the ANM2 .30 BMGs should be ready late next year . I will be building two USMC Iwo Jima "Stingers" from my two parts kits , and I would be willing to trade one for a JLMG copy , if anyone has any interest . Chris
  6. Less than 4 hrs left http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unknown-Apex-25-06-rifle-barrel-with-Lyman-Sight-Savage-/221138896517?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item337ce7c685 Chris Not mine , yada , yada, yada.
  7. A bit late to the party here , but you might look at the 25MM can. It is built like the popular 20 and 30 MM big cans your familure with , just smaller. It is long enough to lay them flat and stack them and high enough to house them upright , too. Chris
  8. Very nice . I really want to get one of these . Oh , well . Maybe the economy will pick up so I can. I am proceeding with my pair of USMC Stinger conversions. I should have them done in a month . Then it's just waiting for the plate mfgs to come out with a run of semi-auto plates . Figure after they're done I might trade one of them for one of these LMG s. Chris
  9. Woops ... sorry Joseph , you're right. Hummm.......maybe I should have my eyes checked. Glad you're on the mend. Chris
  10. I'd think the one missing in pic 2 . If the brass is ejected with extreme gusto , your mainspring will need to be replaced. You might also pull the little sliding reciever end plate off and the little block/plug inside. Then disconnect the rod from the mainspring and let it dangle out the back while the gun is standing on it's buttplate. Give the barrel a good shove back . The bolt should rotate and unlock. If it doesn't , the cam serfaces on the bolt carrier / bolt head may be worn. Not unsafe , but could cause failures to eject and feed as energy is used to overcome the drag. Chris
  11. Would not the function of the muzzle brake slow the recoil of the barrel , causing functioning problems , to a point were I would think the weight would not be a factor in it no longer working ? If the muzzle brake was so inefficent as to allow functioning , would it then not serve it's function as a brake ? Now , a flash hider would be a different story . Hummm....a blank adaptor . Would a blank adaptor work in this sort of action ? Or would the gas pushing on the plug hinder functioning ? Has anyone fired blanks out of a Johnson before ? Chris
  12. 14mm and 9/16 are very close . I just screwed a 9/16 course nut onto a 14mm-2.0 bolt and it went over half way before the thread count locked her up. I have an example of a M-65 Reising .22 that the USMC suppressed to kill vermin in the supply dumps in the PTO without awaking the sleeping troops . It had the front sight set back to give room for the threads and they used 9/16 SAE fine threads for the suppressor mounting because SAE was the newest and bestest ( according to SAE ) . You may have an original experimental test bed there . Chris
  13. Order Joseph's DVD . I don't have one , but it has come highly recommended by others here. Chris
  14. Hi Joseph . The rifle has two grooves on the top front for the sight and one behind on the bottom for the bayonet lug. Are you saying 1) the MG sight will align with two of these grooves , or 2) that the barrels have both sets of cuts and they are hidden under the installed sight setup currently on it , or 3) either set will fit on all barrels but you have to add the appropriate cuts if changing around ? Thanks , Chris
  15. The tapered holes ( bbl grooves ) are in the wrong place. The ID/OD may or may not be the same , but it would be no biggie to modify by turning or reaming . Chris
  16. I think they will switch as far as sliding in and locking up. Headspace would have to be checked , of course . The difference in the mounting spacing of the front sights and the hight of the same would mean that you could not sight them in without some modification . So , I guess it means what you mean by interchangeable. Chris
  17. Joseph , I am so sorry to hear that news . I pray that the spirit will comfort, support , and guide you through the difficult time ahead . Let us on the board help you if we can. Chris
  18. Now just find a couple of junk barrels , cut off the muzzle ends , and mount them to stick out of the grill on either side of the plate. Chris
  19. If it is short cycling , then not enough power is working the bolt. This could be weak ammo ( not enough power to give ) , frosting of the chamber ( power being spent ripping the case out , check your cases for extractor rim deformation [ over worked extractor ] and markings on the sides [ from a rough chamber ] ) , or worn cam serfaces in the locking rail that runs along the top of the bolt . This can be checked by removing the plate at the rear of the action , removing the cylindrical piece inside , unlatching the rod from the mainspring cup and letting it dangle in space while the muzzle is up. Pushing the bbl in should release the bolt . If it doesn't unlock and you have to raise the bolt handle to finish unlocking , that could be your problem. That condition sucks up a lot of energy because a lot of it is used to force the bolt free. A short spring will cause the opposite problem , too fast bolt speed . They do get worn out though , so checking the length is SOP on a new gun. Tumbling , hard to see that on a Johnson . Check for a big burr or other deformation at the muzzle . It would have to be very worn otherwise , which the bullet test above would reveal. HTH , Chris
  20. I have a local gunshop here who took in a Johnson rifle stock to repair . The repairs are now complete , but now in reassembly he found he's misplaced the buttplate. He has torn his shop apart looking for it ( it's now the neatest I've ever seen it in the last decade or so ) . He only has the stock , but he says that he needs a 80-85 percent or better plate to replace the lost one. Does anyone have a spare ? The owner of the stock will be back in town for the weekend gunshow and he'd like to have it ready for him by then if at all possible. TIA for any help. Chris
  21. He's here in Yuma with me and the gunsmith. Chris
  22. Thanks guys . He did loose an original . I talked to him and he said he'll take both ryche's and one of Joe's new ones and let the customer decide. I think it'll be too late to get them here by this weekend. Anyway , a new member here , AR-50A1 , will be contacting you on this . He sees the gunsmith far more often than I do. He's good and I'll back up his purchase of these. Thanks all , Chris
  23. I have lots of these from about 10-15 metal cans of 700 rounds each of FN-52 30-06 ball . Never knew what rifle they fitted , but they work well in USGI arms and in the Browning belt loaders. Chris
  24. My point was that decades ago you just never saw a filed sight. After the book came out , it's been a lot harder to find one that's NOT cut. Not that anyone would do that to make someone think it was an original USMC rifle . Chris
  25. Wait for Joseph to get back to you. He has them . $20 beats $30 and $5-6 flat rate beats $15. Chris
