  1. Very well Said Ed, Thank You. As with all the firearms in my collection, I started collecting johnson rifles because I adore the design, the function, and their history. The increase in value the Johnson rifle has undergone, is astonishing, and of course has meaning, however if they were valued at say the level of a Mosin Nagant, I would just have a larger collection of them, and would adore them just the same. Understanding the sacrifice and devotion that Melvin Johnson put into his design, the incredible innovation, foresight, and how it has influenced current designs just makes it that much more important as a historical masterpiece. Regards to all, S
  2. Congratulations Valmet, what a fine rifle you have. Enjoy shooting it, and get ready for some gawking if you shoot at a public range. Never fails to draw the interested and curious to the bench where a Johnson 1941 sits. I of course did not know Mr. Johnson, however I think that by bringing these rifles out to the range, and shooting them, and exposing the public to them, we honor his diligence, creativity, and drive to create something better. I will often take the rifle apart, and show other shooters, especially the AR-15 crowd, just how much of the genius of Johnson made their black rifles possible. It never ceases to amaze me how people react to seeing that bolt, with its slender fingers, and then of course it becomes obvious. They are indeed treasures.
  3. Here is a link to a site that still has the photos up. http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=498850
  4. Some things I noticed along with some questions about the rifle from the pictures, correct me if I am wrong: the front of the receiver has been chopped, How does the recoil mechanism function without the forward (not sure of the word for it) round element that fits on the barrel and slides into the cooling shroud. The stock appears to be a replacement, the barrel looks like a winfield that had its front end cut off, the rear sight assembly appears to be missing, and the receiver looks to be plated. Looks to me like the trigger guard is sitting to far back, as on originals the trigger shoe sits naturally in the rear portion of the bow, on this rifle it appears slightly front of center, and the rear return on the trigger guard has been lengthened an it is plated. Not sure about the bottom metal where the magazine goes... never seen anything like it. Original in any way shape or form?
  5. Thank You Chief, I just came back to this website after a long asbsence (I thought the site was taken down??) in any case nice to be back... I still have my little collection of 4 johnsons including two 7mm Chileans, and I am glad to be back in touch with the forum. I would like to change my handle on the board as I have not been using the old one for years. Some story on that rifle, and thanks for clueing me in to what it actually is. Regards, S
  6. Never seen one like this but the story seems a bitt odd to me. http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php?t=610614
  7. Sarco tent peg.... caveat emptor !
  8. I was up at he Ventura gun show today and saw a JSAR on a table that I believe was a miltech restoration.... was rushing through though and did not have time to get all the particulars.
  9. I have two pristine chileans in my collection, both are excellent shooters and both of course have the collar marked 30-06...I find them to be somewhat more pleasant to shoot than the .30 cals.
  10. Ouch, that finish is very "sandblasty". Just does'nt look right on a Johnson. What the heck is Miltech thinking... why dont they just leave the original texture finish and repark it... at least that would be more correct to its original state.
  11. I shoot all my Johnsons... 30-06 as well as the 7mm ones.... I prefer the 7mm just because its kind of different. They all shoot beautifully, my only problem is trying to explain to all the people who want to know.... what the heck is that! Definately an attention getter, anywhere you go. Get the new mainspring and have at it.
  12. Very nice, I like it! Dogg
  13. My goodness, some folks just cant let the truth stand in the way of the story, especially where $$$ is involved... Maybe I should let him take a look at one of mine and see what kind of story he would come up with as a buyer rather than seller, that would be the "tell" on his schtick.
  14. I heard his story also, about it being from an army base museum and he got it from the curator who had retired and was given some stuff or something like that. This guy has some garands with stocks so humped its just a joke. Caveat emptor.
  15. Thank You Brian, great pics.
