  1. I live on the West Coast and we don't get tables like that out here. Brian, if I ever happen to see you I'm sure I'll be happy to hang around a while and talk Johnsons. By the way, that's a great story and I remember that highly accented JSAR on GB that was there forever. Always wondered who would've bought it.
  2. Miltech does a fine job with their restorations but they're just a little too "sanitary" for my taste.
  3. Very cool photo. Any guess as to the year it was taken?
  4. I was only aware that an unpolished chamber was a problem on extraction of a fired case, not on insertion of a fresh, properly sized round. Since this JSAR failed to eject, reinserting a fired casing could easily make it difficult for the bolt to fully engage / lock. Upon re-reading this thread I can see that I misread a comment that answered the topic. My apologies.
  5. One thing that is seldom discussed, (probably because there's no way to accurately know), is the loss JSAR's by attrition over the years. We've all heard stories and seen examples of Johnson's lost in home fires or other disaster's. I remember seeing two seperate news reports of crackdowns by law enforcement of motorcycle gangs, for example, where the pile of guns confiscated, and presumably destroyed, included some JSAR's. There's no possible way of knowing how many Johnson's have been lost or destroyed over the years but I'd venture that it's been more than any of us would care to imagine. Mike
  6. That piece has been on Gun Broker.com for a while with no bites.
  7. Here's a Winfield Johnson on GB that's been bubba-fied real fine. Obviously for the discriminating and refined collector. A little too high-falootin' for my taste but......? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=152576644
  8. Thank you and Happy New Year to you and your family, Ed, and may we all have a better year in 2010. I know I sure wouldn't mind getting back to work. Take care, everyone. Mike
  9. Hey Joe, If the deal doesn't work out with Brian's set, I have a Winfield set that's not checkered. It has a nice cheek pad with the recoil key holes plugged. I'm not trying to undercut Brian's deal, I've listed no price, but if your buyer is looking for something different, maybe I can help. I don't seem to visit here as often as I'd like so if you want to reach me a little faster then try sfbadger@earthlink.net. Thanks, Mike
  10. I had always loved my uncles JSAR ever since he brought it home from a gun show in 1973, buying it for $120. In 1982, when I turned 21, he introduced me to a friend of his named Doc, who's well known in Johnson circles, and Doc built me one from unused parts for $500. I was the happiest 21 year old in town! A few years later my uncle sold me his Johnson, again for $500. I still own and occassionally shoot both of them to this day. I'll never sell my Johnson's! They say that when you die, you can't take 'em with ya, but I'm sure going to try!
  11. Matt, that may not be the worst butcher job you've ever seen but it's #1 on my "worst ever" list! OMG, what have they done?
  12. I saw that and I'm very close to buying the box set of "The War"! Just when I thought I'd seen all of the WW II footage in the archives, they came up with a lot that was new to me. A great series! Joe, have you gotten a new web site yet? Mike
  13. I love this board for just this reason, topics and discussions just like this!
  14. Diggerj is absolutely correct, Tom's 1/3 Mix is a final treatment and not meant to be used as a replacement for blo or tung oil. Please pardon my oversight. Thanks!
  15. Hi everyone, While I use blo quite often, I found this mix to work great! I was unsure until I tried it and now I'm a believer! http://www.thegunstockdoctor.com/ I haven't visited this site in a while and you sure miss a lot when you're away! Mike
  16. Hey Mitch, That is a fantastic collection and very cool !!! When the tour comes around, I'm on board! Maybe I missed it but I didn't see a location anywhere? What will it take to visit that amazing place? Please keep us informed. Thanks, Mike
  17. I can't help but be surprised that Cabela's sells guns like that. I've been buying supplies and ammo from them for the past four years without a clue! Thanks Matt, Mike
  18. It'll be interesting to see if it sells for this price! posted 11/01/2007 https://www.gunsamerica.com/Classifieds/Vie..._976975549.aspx By the way, does anyone know if Joe Scott has a new web site yet? Thanks, Mike
  19. Hey Matt, I'm famaliar with Cabela's online and retail store's but unaware of any gun selling site that they are either on or running, how can I take a look at what you're referring to? I'm still blown away by that $9,500.00 selling price! It makes me very happy that I own two! Thanks, Mike
  20. Well then, this one from Gun Broker.com will surprise you. It sold last week for $9,500.00. Very impressive price! http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem....p?Item=83239474
  21. Webmaster, You've got to be kidding? You mean that checkering on the stock is considered a modification of any consequence? I'm not interested in a purchase but I am certainly curious as to the reasoning behind that law? Could the government then argue that the mere refinishing of a guns wood stock or metal parts be a modification also? It's hard to understand the logic of those regulations. Mike
  22. Hi Art, I have a question about one of the auction's on GunBroker.com. Can you think of why the seller of these two JSAR's states that his Sporter type can NOT be sold in the US? Am I reading his post incorrectly? I'm referring to this; THIS LISTING IS FOR THE FULL MILITARY CONFIG 1941 ONLY AT 5500.00 THE SPORTER IS IN THE PICTURES FOR NON-U.S. BUYERS ONLY--IT CANNOT BE SOLD IN THE U.S.OR IMPORTED INTO THE U.S.A. ACCORDING TO MY FFL DEALER--IT'S PRICE IS 2500.00--(8000.00 FOR BOTH) ADDITIONAL PICTURES AT http://johnsoncollector.com/johnson_1941 (I ARRANGE THE DELIVERY TO MY FFL DEALER IN MONTANA****WHO WILL ARRANGE DELIVER TO THE U.S. BUYER**********) I think this is from the second or third listing from GunBroker.com that you have posted here. I read it a couple of weeks ago and I've wanted to ask someone. He says it can't be sold or imported into the US? It can't? Thanks, Mike
  23. Thank you, Webmaster Jim, I really appreciate your help. Mike
  24. Can I please get a manufacturing history for two JSAR's? #5508 and #A6986. Thanks, Mike
  25. I think that would be an outstanding idea !!!! That would be something I could definitely get behind. I would love to see the Spitfire reintroduced also. You've got a great idea I'd like to see become a reality!!! Please keep us informed, Mike
