It does'nt "necesesarily" pay to research your guns numbers and history, however if all the numbers on your gun matched the original factory records (doubtful) I believe that could positively affect the value of the gun. And of course provinance can greatly affect value, but is very difficult to obtain reliable and documented history on a specific JSAR. Also, your Johnson would have to be in the first batch (no letter prefix in the serial number) to be able to research the factory parts numbers. It is definitely safe to fire the Johnson without the bolt hold-open. Many were purposely removed and some may have just broken.

I notice in your picture the front sight blade is very short. The sight on my rifle is about identical to yours. My rifle shoots high, does this one? Can anyone tell me if that is the correct sight height? Were there other heights available? Good luck on your sale and congratulations on the nicer gun!

It appears to have a crack or break. Check the second photo closely.

That is a nice looking example. As with all Miltech guns it has been completely refinished however the majority of the 41's around have had at least some refinishing. It appears the "cheek" on the right side of the stock has been repaired. The left side looks untouched. The metal finish looks a little too dark but perhaps its just the photos. Value? I don't want to step on anyones toes here but I would think at minimum $4500 on gunbroker.

Great find and looks to be in great condition too! You're right, it is great to own one of these fantastic rifles. I'll never forget the day I bought mine at a gun show. I slung it over my shoulder to walk the rest of the show and I could barely get twenty feet without someone wanting to know what that wierd rifle was and asking to hold it. I'm sure several people were started on their quest to find a Johnson that day. Good luck with yours, and remember to show it off!

If the rifle was grouping alright and you're using the bullet weight and type that you plan to continue using then you can shorten the front sight (a little at a time) until it shoots to point of aim at the 100m setting on the rear sight. In other words, if your front sight is too high you will shoot low, so to compensate you have to raise the rear. Conversly, if you set the rear sight on its 100m setting and slowly remove height from the front sight you will eventually get on target. I hope that is not confusing.

Brian, thanks for the info on part numbers and finish. Looks like the only original part on my gun is the receiver! Oh well, it looks great and I am really happy to finally have one. I'll post pics later. Mitch J, thanks for the heads up on a source for parts.

Hi everyone. I just became the proud owner of a nice Johnson rifle after a quest of twenty years. I ran across a few over that time but they were always priced a few hundred (or thousand) dollars more than I could afford. But that has changed now. I met a fine man at a gun show who had onwed this gun for over twenty years and we reached a selling price we both could live with. I think he knows it will have a good and safe new home. The gun is in its original military state however at this time I'm not sure if it has the original finish. The metal appears to be a very dark color compared to the parkerizing I'm used to on Garands or carbines, but definitely has not been polished. It is missing a pin just ahead of the magazine that I believe is similar to the hammer block pin. Can anyone tell me where I could find one of these? I have seen some rifles that don't appear to have ever had this pin. When did they quit using it? My serial number is 4642. I would appreciate any info someone can provide. I'll post pictures after I get it taken apart and examined. Thanks for the forum!
