  1. Just a comment - I have an early numbered JSAR )2300's) without laminated cheeks - when I first saw them I thought they were armoury re-work but finally figured through this site that they are factory. It would be a great piece of history to figure out when this happened in production - I'm assuming 1942.
  2. Greetings, Do you have any JSAR barrels? Would you ship to Canada? Thanks
  3. OK -Ryche -I'd say you were BS'ing me if I don't know you as the upstanding member of JSAR that I've seen - How the eff did ia JSAr get to Afghanistan? Mitch - you are probably too right - expect a flood of "documented" Afghanistan JSAR's...
  4. Hey, I had a post on something similar, but it probably got copied as a backup and deleted from this forum. On my JSAR, on the bottom of the pistol grip is a number of dots made with a punch - it looks like it reads "0" over "37" - no idea what it means and it's far too sloppy to be the mark of an armourer.
  5. Beautiful job! I get what you mean with the marks, you wonder were it's been laid, where it was dropped, what marks are from action... I hated refinishing my stock and was super careful (especially after buying my Ross rifle and some dumb-ass sanding all the serial numbers and stampings off of it)... Nice to see your handi-work!
  6. Thanks Sledge101 & Joseph!!! And yes - I keep reading about Joseph's excellent skills and dedication to quality which is why I thought this might be a great topic! Joseph - no pressure, I'm sure you're itching to get back at your tools, but good health and family come first.
  7. I was just readng some of the comments in the "New Stocks Available" topic and I have to admit that I'm disapointed (but not surprised) that Joseph can't ship a new stock and barrel to the great white north... Since I can't personally enjoy the benefits of Joseph's skills, I was wondering if anyone else was interested in posting a photo or two of their JSAR fitted with a new stock or barrel from Mr. Scott? If you don't want to post a photo, maybe you can just let everyone know how your project turned out? Thanks
  8. Everyone make it through the "Winter Vortex" OK? No major problems in Niagara. Buffalo got hit hard and Toronto had 300,000 people without power for days. One of the falls at Niagara froze as well http://www.niagarafallsreview.ca/2014/01/10/niagara-falls-photo-goes-viral
  9. Hi Everyone, Im having a continuing issue with my JSAR where the spring latch that secures the barrel pops out when the rifle is fired. Last time I wrote about this, Joseph thought it was possible the bolt spring was worn. I bought a new one from Joseph (which it definitely needed), installed it and took it to a gunsmith for a once-over and it received a clean bill of health. However, back at the range, it is still acting up. It was suggested that it might be caused by the bolt slamming into the barrel when it reloads the next round but I tried it with just a single round, which leaves the action open, and it still does the same thing. I should mention that the latch assembly has been examined by both the gunsmith and myself and there doesnt seem to be any wear that would cause this issue. Does anyone have any suggestions for next steps? Thanks let me know if photos would help
  10. I couldn't wait - I tweeked the rail spacing for a final time and I snuck out to the range today between errands and family stuff. I shot over 60 rounds without any problems with the latch. Thanks everyone for your advice and interest!
  11. Thanks Joseph - I should really find a copy of the book... Alan, I bought a Ross 1910 from CS and was really pleased - a few minor issues but the metalwork was like-new. They stuck it in the mail and Canada Post sent it to the wrong depot, I had to run around to different Shoppers Drug Marts to find it and then I had to convince the girl behind the counter that the "tall box in the corner" was likely my missing package. Anyways, I beleive I'm the only owner in Niagara but I think there was one more out your way. If you search the forum for "Canada" or "Ontrio" you can probably narrow it down. The first time I took it to the Silverdale Range most of the regulars knew what it was but had never seen one in person. It was like being the kid with the best toy so I let everyone fire a few rounds until I hit the problem with the Barrel Latch.
  12. Hey Alan, Nice buy! You definately do not see anything Johnson up here especially parts. The last one I saw for sale was at Collector's Source in Acton about two years ago, I don't remember the price but I think it was $3500. Mine has no prefix as well and I wish I knew more about how they came to the Great White North?
  13. Hi Elmer, As a fairly new person myself I can vouch that everyone here has been very generous with their knowledge (and patience). If you want to post pictures in a reply like this, look for the button in the lower right that says "More Reply Options". That should open a new screen. In the lower left corner you should see two Browse buttons and a paper clip next to Attach Files You can use them to browse to photos or documents on your computer and attach them to your post. For myself - I've had some problems with this working so sometimes I have to edit a post and re-attach a photo. For example the picture below took 5 tries to get it to attach - but it could be just my browser or the connection.
  14. Hi Ryche, I adjusted the gap like Joseph suggested and it seems to latch more solidly, however I think I was over cautious and Im thinking that I should adjust it a bit more before I test it. I should have time to get to the range this next week and will post results as soon as I can. I'm already losing sleep over it, but this weekend is our Thanksgiving so I have to work around the family schedule :-|
  15. Sorry for the delay in replying - I wanted to get some pics. I think Joseph is right, that the rails are spread. When the latch is shut there is 10-15 thou of space which seems excessive. The first photo shows how much play there is when the latch is held tightly to one side. The second picture shows the latch button, which seems to have nice square sides but is depressed a bit. The latch seems to be in fine shape, the spring has firm resistance, the latch doesn't pop out when I cycle by hand. just when firing. The problem appeared the first time I took the rifle to the range after shooting about 30 rounds. So I think my best bet is to thouroughly clean the latch button and close the rail gap slightly. If that doesn't work, I may be in the market for a new latch. Thanks for the guidance! I'll try to get out and test it again in the next couple of weeks when I can get to the range.
  16. As far as I know/can tell, everything is original. All the numbers match the list Ed sent me - except the barrel, which is off by one digit and I think is likely a typo.
  17. RE: auction 340904427 It looks like the stock has been repaired on the checks behind the magazine. Is this common? I'm asking because I'm sure I've seen a rifle in a previous auction post with the same repair (if not the same rifle since the one check was noticable lighter)
  18. Hi Joe, My fore stock is great but I would be interested in a spare stock if you have them. Thanks Ryan
  19. Hi Joseph, Best wishes for a quick recovery. Friends of mine with a similar condition have found the outcome very good and the treatment very tolerable. I fully endorse the larger screen at home, dispalys are relatively cheap and it can really help with eye strain. Talk to you soon. Ryan
  20. Hi Everyone, I`ve been trying to connect with Joe since late last year to get a copy of his videos and a replacement mainspring for my JSAR. Can someone in touch with Joe please ask him if he`s recieved my messages. I realize that there have been other `responsibilities that required his attention and I don`t want to pull him away from anything. Please PM me, Many Thanks All.
  21. The shows here are awful - it's nice to see someone keeping the dealers honest!
  22. Congrats!, Being from the Great White North... we had to endure the overwatch of a gun registry (2 Billion $ - getting scrapped as we speak). Anyways - under this cloud I was handed my Johnson by someone who was afraid of being in possession without a permit – someone who was handed the rifle from an unknown vet and who made a promise to not hand it in to be destroyed. I never had plans to keep it, I thought I’d pass it on to a collector etc (never knowing the rarity or value) The rifle spent a year or two in my gun cabinet before I started researching it and the more I looked the more I became intrigued. I have to admit that it is probably my favorite shooter, and it’s a lot of fun going to the shooting range and having the best “toy”. Enjoy
  23. Thanks metrotps - sounds like a good idea!
  24. A few weeks ago I got impatient waiting for the weather to break so I snuck in a couple of backyard test shots just to make sure my JSAR worked (It had not been fired for probably 20 years). Well – yesterday I finally made it to the range and was able to play a bit. This rifle is serious fun. I went through about 50 rounds and let a few members test it as well. Most of the members had seen pictures but never a real rifle – everyone was impressed by it. One member let me fire a Kel Tec RFB which was cool – but not as much fun. Of course in all this fun – I didn’t really check my casings until I ran into problems…. I fired manufactured rounds (Lellier & Bellot 150grs) – no cartridges failed The rifle didn’t jam and the bolt and action seemed to work smoothly. The rifle did fail to fire three times (loaded, pull trigger, click – no fire – recycled rounds fired fine) The barrel release latch popped out a few times. Looking at the casings – there’s a lot going on. The whole casing has light scrub marks especially at the neck and about 0.5” from the rim. The rim itself has been flattened and slightly bent by the extractor; on the opposite side is a major rectangular dent right on the edge (guessing about 0.040” x 0.080” and 0.008” deep) I’ll probably have to take it in to a pro but I’d really appreciate any opinions. Thanks Ryan
  25. Great work! I'm implementing a forum at work – so I sympathize with the challenges involved. Thanks for your efforts!
