  1. WOW, I hope they share…
  2. Maybe as a pattern but at that price… that stock needs a lot of work. Whit
  3. If this is a violation of the rules please delete. I do not know this seller nor am I in any way related to this seller. Someone was looking for a Johnson sight and there are two left on EBay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Johnson-M1941-model-NOS-WW2-rear-sight-/363489381643?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49286&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0 I don’t know if these are truly NOS but I bought one (there were three) with the intention of making a larger peep hole in it and saving my original sight. I welcome opinions from the experts here on its status (real vs repro)
  4. Thanks to all for the advice! I’ve got no ego in this, just happy to learn / add to my knowledge base such as it is. Thanks again, Whit
  5. With the rifle pointing away from you correct?
  6. OK, makes sense, how do I make sure I don’t damage the receiver dovetail when removing? I have brass punches and polished hammers to prevent marking the surface, which direction do I drive the sight out? Whit
  7. That is fine, I may send back or I may see if I can use the L shaped sight portion with my original by retapping the threads in the Chinese version. I want to shoot my rifle but the peep sight hole is too small for my vision to resolve the front sight adequately. I’m not willing to damage the original sight. What are the threads in the original please? Whit

  9. A7729 is now mine though not in my hands as of yet. I would be grateful for any information about it members would like to share. Eventually I want to return it to military configuration so I’m looking for a buttstock and Buttplate and rear sling swivel. Would also like a military configuration barrel. Any leads towards parts would be appreciated as well. Whit
  10. No worries I was just curious Whit
  11. Well I used a .051” miked drill bit and it slides in easily with a small bit of play. My next drill bit miked at .054 and did not. So mine is either .052 or .053” why would a combat rifle have a national match sized peep hole? Why is .052” an “in between number?” Sorry for the dumb questions. Whit
  12. Thank you! Whit
  13. What size hole did you use for the peep sight? Does anyone know what the Military versions had for their peep sight hole? Mine is a Sporter that I have reconfigured to Military but I wonder if the sight was messed with as the peep sight hole is tiny and even in good light makes using it difficult. I can understand why the USMC occasionally turned it into a V.
  14. Who did the restoration?
  15. Does your rifle still have the buffer assembly at the rear of the spring? Whit
  16. Very well done! Kudos! Whit
  17. Are there no records available for A7729? I can’t remember if I asked this earlier.
  18. I just used his conservation technique (boil in H2O, card with fine degreased 0000 steel wool, soak in kerosene) and wow did that make a difference. I wish I had taken before and after photos. Night and day difference and a bunch of original finish appeared from under mung and gack and the rust disappeared with the very light “carding” by the 0000 steel wool and plastic toothbrush.
  19. It was an easy thing to do. I had to take the Jungmann to a gunsmith to get the gas clean out screw loose because mine was pretty well on and I was living by the idea that fixing things is easier if you don’t screw it up first. (Mark Novak Pat pending). Then I bought five of the screws online and filed one at a diagonal and one at a point just at the full length of the screw then another one that I shortened slightly then pointed it and a third that was shorter still at a point again. Thus I had four options at the range. I eventually went with one of the pointed ones. It wasn’t adjustable but you could just tighten it home and make a Mark on the screw and the gas block and know that it was tight by a glance. The adjustable one was neat but I was worried it would loosen itself up. A locking nut would have solved this but I failed to order one for the weird thread.
  20. I owned a Jungman, I sold it and I probably shouldn’t have but only so much room in the gun safe... I adapted a screw to swap for the front gas port cleanout screw to reduce the gas going back to the bolt carrier. Instead of just being an access port to the gas system for cleaning, I used a longer screw with an angle filed into it. This partly blocked the gas return path which reduced the speed of the bolt carrier and made brass life increase. You could turn the screw slightly to vary the amount of gas or just experiment with different angles on different screws. It worked really well and I got it so I could drop the brass in a pile out at 3 O’clock. I wasn’t going to war with it so it was a decent modification. Would not want to stick my hand anywhere near that action, Garand Thumb, bad, Jungman Missing Fingers... worse!
  21. I just took my JSAR out and shot both the sporter barrel that came with it and an acquired military barrel. It was reasonably accurate and enjoyable to shoot. I did have a problem with brass extraction. I think the brass was extracted but where it was extracted to is a bit of a mystery. Out of 20 fired shots we found two brass cases... a new recoil spring has been ordered.

  23. Thanks for both replies! And thanks for all the help, especially M48Tanker and John R for the parts help. Whit
  24. That is a reasonable suggestion and was my initial intention. You clearly have talent as your results would satisfy me 110% or slightly higher. However my Sporter stock has a small amount of damage that’s probably beyond my ability to seamlessly integrate a repair. Photo attached. Someone with talent could repair this I am sure. I have been unable to reach Mr Scott but M48Tanker has graciously sold me the needed parts and another forum member has sold me a reproduction stock so at this point I intend to try to install the required hardware in the reproduction stock and check it’s functionality. If it works then I will refinish it. I also have a spare handguard and I intend to drill out the solid pin holding the magazine in place and replace the original pin and modify the handguard to match. Another poster here recently did a similar restoration and it looks and functions much better. Lastly I purchased a replacement military barrel so that part is restored. I really like this rifle and appreciate the support shown by the forum members here. I’m farther down the rabbit hole than I should have gone but I could recoup some amount by selling off my Sporter parts at a later date. For now they help me have a functional rifle as I chase the restoration. I’m also having fun. Lastly (again) any suggestions on removing the Sporter recoil pad? The two screws came out easily but the pad seems to remain welded onto the wood. There’s clearly some paint on the wood of the stock in a black and cream pinstripe but then the rubber seems glued to the back of the buttstock. I’d prefer not to destroy it during the removal so I can shoot it with it on. But without removal I can’t check the recoil spring length or move recoil parts to the new stock. (Not the tube, it says put. )
