Hello. I have a Johnson rifle missing the front sight and bayonet lug. It is a rifle converted to 7.62 nato. The barrel does not match to the gun so I believe it may be a from another Johnson rifle or different firearm? If anybody is able to sell me the front sight and bayonet lug that would be great! I am located in Canada.

Hello. I am trying to disassemble Johnson rifle. I am at the stage of removing the operating handle from the bolt. It is very difficult. I am easily able to pull the pin out. Moves about 1/8 inch but cannot slide the handle forward to remove. The pin is slightly bent. I do not want to apply to much force and risk damaging anything. Any tricks or tips to help coax it out? Have lightly oiled. Thank you.

This is a very late update. My idea was to try and convert this Johnson to close to as original as possible. First off I wanted to remove the barrel to check the numbers off of it and inspect further components. The bolt was never able to be removed. I’m unsure where this bolt handle is from but it was actually silver soldered onto the bolt itself. I had sourced and found a rear sight ramp, rear sight , front sight and bayonet lug. The rifle was chambered with a 308 barrel that has a larger outside diameter than a 30-06 barrel. Aswell this barrel has a slight taper to it. Was unable to find someone to be able to stretch the front sight and bayonet lug over this barrel and to ensure the proper taper for a snug fit. This would all have to happen after the operating handle would be heated up to melt the solder and remove operating handle. Not something any smiths near me will take on. No use in installing rear sight ramp and sight. The rifle is drilled and tapped for a scope and without the other components being able to work I believe it was always meant to be shot with a scope. A commercial model possibly? Any insight would be great. Thank you.

Let me know the depth of the holes when you have a look. I’ll be bringing it in to a gunsmith to have that completed. I’m not having a buddy hold it while I hit it with ol Milwaukee. Should Deffinetely be done in a drill press.

Worked it a bit more and still unable to get apart. So it looks like my only option is to drill two holes in it like m48 tanker had suggested. How deep are the holes on these operating handles? Are they just 1/8-1/4 inch Deep or do they physically go all the way through the metal of the disc? I just don’t want to damage any components under the disc. The only thing I can think of is an operating handle was installed that didn’t have the holes drilled from factory. Most likely why the pin itself is bent from the folks before me trying to remove it.

Okay thank you camstuff that would be great! I’m a little Leary at this point of drilling holes in anything. If it was made to thread out there would be a way to do that. And yes I should be using penetrating oil now.

No those are not punch marks. I added a bit of oil to free things up a around the pin and your just seeing some flashes from it in the picture.

There is no threaded disc around the pin. The pin itself does spin. Should it be able to do that? I am able to depress it outwards from the ‘backside’ of the operator handle but still difficult to slide out. Any tips or tricks?

Yeah I had stumbled over that post. It’s odd because the handle doesn’t have the two holes. Should I try straightening the pin out?

Hello. I have just purchased a Johnson m1941 with book. attached are the only three pictures I have at the moment that the seller has sent me. According to him it does fire and function properly. Unfortunately it has had the sight removed and been drilled and tapped for a scope. Are there any instances of this being done where it is correct to history? Or is it a bubba. As well it has been rebarreled and I am hoping it is still correct to be original to the history. It is electro penciled 308 and beside it nato. I am aware of navy and other instances converting these to the nato 7.62x51 and I believe that is what it is. I understand 308 is very similar to 308. Just seems odd that it says 308 and nato. Unless it is just what the guy converting it had stencilled for whatever reason saying it’s functional with both. Let me know what you folks think. I would love to track down a sight to slap on to help it become closer to original. Thank you. I will post more pictures as soon as it’s in my hands.

Thank you. I will peel it apart and check if the numbers match up once I get the chance. I am attempting to try and source the sights, bayonet lug and stock to help restore it.

I have the rifle in my hands but first I am going to give some backstory on it. I had sold a set of tires on Facebook to a guy. His profile showed him as a avid hunter. When he arrived to buy them I asked if he had any firearms for sale. He thought about it and said he actually did. Shortly afterwards I received those three pictures of this rifle. I was not familiar with the gun at all and neither was he. I asked him how much he would like and he told me 350 bucks. I said sure. We both did some researching shortly after and discovered what the firearm actually was. Of course the price was altered a little bit but I sure came out of this deal pretty happy. You never know what someone has unless you ask. Anyways attached are some more pictures for you guys to look at. He had purchased it off a guy something like 30 years ago. It came with what I believe is an instruction manual or just a informational book. The book is stamped to a guy. I’m not sure if that is who had owned the rifle before him but I will try to see if I can track him down and figure out more info. I will throw up a few pictures of the first few pages aswell. I can share the rest if there is any interest. The stock is in tougher shape than I had thought. I will disassemble gun one of these evenings when the kids aren’t jumping around.
