How to Use Rear Sight on LMG

I have had Johnson LMG for a few years and have not found any literature or person that knows how to properly use the rear sight on the LMG. If some one could provide this information I would be most appreciative.

According to "Instruction Manual of the Johnson Light Machine Gun" first published July 1941 Pg. 44 #21, 2 peep holes are provided, 1 for short and 1 for long range.
