Bayonet question

While looking at the thread with bayonets for sale, there seems to be numbers stamped on the part of the bayonet that the barrel goes through. Were these numbers stamped with rifle serial numbers or just random production numbers?

To the best of my knowledge, the numbers were put on by other countries to reduce theft.  I don't remember seeing a numbered bayonet until after Navy Arms imported some.
