To the 5.7 Club... 09/27/05

This is to give everyone a brief update on current events with the M1 Carbine

chambered in 5.7mm Johnson.

1) Some 5.7 Club members have assisted us with testing 5.7 ammo from

various commercial sources. Currently, we have had very good results with

products by Roy Tipton at "T's Ammo" in Texas City, Texas, who can be

reached at: TSGUNSANDAMMO@SBCGLOBAL.NET

2) We have also had very good feedback from club members who have utilized

the services of Gunsmith Rich Hoffman in making conversions as well as

complete carbines. Rich also produces Gatling Gun Replicas in .22LR and

he can be reached at: BWEFIREARMS@AOL.COM

3) The above endorsements are not meant to exclude other ammunition

sources, Carbine manufacturers or Gunsmiths, many of whom are mentioned

on Steve Enstad's 5.7 Website. However, at this point in time, our most

recent Club experience has been with Mr. Tipton and Mr. Hoffman. If people

ask me for an opinion, I tend to be conservative, relying on the judgment

of people with practical, first hand experience. We are now experiencing, on

a reliable basis, 3000FPS velocity from 18" barrel with no excessive pressure.

4) At this point, we should all be grateful to the late Larry Horner of IAI for

making the attempt to bring back the interest in the 5.7mm Johnson. As a

result of his efforts, new interest has been generated in this caliber, perhaps

not necessarily limited to the M1 Carbine action. We'll see what the future

may bring, perhaps with short range pistols or sub-carbines.

5) I'm no longer in the gun business, but will always remain interested in

the 5.7mm Johnson as a caliber for handling both 2 and 4 legged varmints,

which was the vision of Melvin M. Johnson, Jr. when the product was first

brought to the market back in the '60's. I will always be grateful to those

club members who sweated their way through frustrations with conversions

and improper ammunition production....you know who you are and I still

probably have most of the old E-mails!!

6) Also, a special pat-on-the-back to Alasdair MacDonald for providing the

final testing which brought me to the point where I am comfortable in now

making these comments to the rest of you. Thanks again, Alasdair.

7) Again, Steve Enstad's 5.7 Website is: www.imageseek.com/5.7mm/

Jim Pullen's Johnson Website & Message Board is:

www.JohnsonAutomatics.com

Best to all of you, Ed Johnson
