Bayonet collection w/ one reproduction

8 posts in this topic

After reading several posts and reviewing the bayonet web page I decided to revisit my bayonet collection.  Numbering from left to right 1 thru 6.  #6 is the reproduction I purchased for $100 last year for comparison.  #3 is partially dipped in plastic or some product and I would like to know if this was a factory thing or something done afterwards.  #4 is a Chilean contract scabbard but I don’t know if the bayonet is also a Chilean.  A couple have numbers stamped onto the ring, one has numbers stamped else where.

Please review the pictures and comments are welcome. Thanks for looking.

I have 4 more pictures, but it won’t let me upload them. Keep getting errors.

Very nice collection. Bayonet prices have gone sky high for the Johnson. I picked up a repro from Sarco recently. That will have to hold me for now.

Hey Torrey

Nice collection. To me, your # 3 scabbard and your #4 bayonet appear to be the better ones.  Bayos #1 &  #3 , the tips appear to have been ground or shortened. You should try and get one of the Dutch contract scabbards, like greerhw's, to round out your collection.  He tagged a photo of his in  a reply to my post

I do see evidence that #1 has some sanding or grinding marks on the tip, and it does not appear to be something done recently, it’s definitely aged.  #3 looks like a factory finish and a uniform color throughout the bayonet. I suspect that the numbers stamped into #1 & #3  may indicate it was a Chilean at one time. Also the #3 was dipped in plastic and kind of has me wondering who, what and why this was done. Maybe there is some history to be learned from this one.

Thank you dhazel74.  Some of these came with the rifles when purchased. I’ll never pay those $500 to $1000 prices for bayonets.  But luckily I’ve come across some really good deals.

To the best  of my knowledge, the bayonets were never 'dipped' in anything  at the factory, other than maybe some protective oil.  When a 'bayonet was required', they opted for this minimalist model over just making a bayonet lug that fit other existing bayonets. The issue is weight, as the barrel cycle depends upon little or no extra weight. Page 96 of "the book" has a pretty good description of the bayonet and why it was designed the way it was.
