I just purchased this Johnson rifle from a dealer in CO

apparently it is all original but has the butt plate modified with a shotgun pad

the dealer seems to think a buttplate will fit right on with no issues

the problem is no butplates to be found!

anyone know of a source for used or repor? Modifying a 1904 Springfield?

your advice is appreciated

I have new butt plates for $30 plus $7 shipping.  One problem with going back to original plate is that the butt is sawed off flat and the shotgun recoil pad is usually glued on and has to be split off.  If your wood does not have the tongue cut-out still there, you will have to make new "tongue" opening on the shortened stock.  The cutoff stock is usually too thin for military plate and you may have to grind edges to fit.  I believe I have fixed my messaging problem, so try message.  One of our members has sucess splicing on additional wood, he may answer about this option.

It looks that where the inletting for the butt plate was at the top someone cut a triangular piece out and clued in a piece of wood.

The inletting for the original butt plate will have to be redone, I did it on my Winfield after a lot of practicing on scrap pieces of wood, turned out OK.

Thanks Joseph, I will take one from you. The seller said a 1903 butt plate fits right on with a slight modification/inletting to account for the spring and stud/screw. How can I make payment?

I believe you're looking at a scratch and not a joint in the wood as that "joint" isn't on both sides of the stock and the grain matches perfectly.

I received the Johnson and removed the existing Pachmyer butt pad. It seems about 1/2" of wood material was used and the tongue area for the buttplate was professional filled. Th messaging system does not seem to be working as I was trying to buy a butt plate from Joseph Scott. My email is rgmindian@yaoo.com if anyone has Joseph email I would appreciate it.

ALos I started a facebook group, hopefully some of you can jooin. I loaded up a bunch of detailed pics of my Johnson here: https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=10226063982246976&set=p.10226063982246976

Well, it looks like an original military stock.  It does look like the butt was trimmed and they skimmed the screw head just a bit. One of the lightning holes was filled when the butt pad was installed.  I have a JSAR where the butt was trimmed for a butt pad, however they trimmed the head of the large screw right off.  It looks like you could still install the metal butt plate on yours.
