  1. Looking at the first few pics...missing rear sling swivel, no big deal. A few screws look wrong. Holes drilled in magazine, prolly an ex California gun and done to limit capacity OR done for hunting purposes. Then I started wondering why the bayonet lug and front sight weren't shown. Then....I saw the rest of the pics. UGH! At first I thought the seller didn't have the camera lens set wide enough...nope, that barrel was chopped OR a much shorter barrel was fitted. Doesn't appear any holes were drilled/tapped in the receiver for a scope. So what gives with chopping a barrel like that? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=427811894
  2. Amen to that. Some guns have this issue, but no need for a white knuckle death grip though.
  3. Thanks for the parts! I won't know if the new extractor will hold the spent case until I get to the range again. It appears that the space between the claw and the ridge behind it is smaller than the one that I was using. The fore-aft movement is barely noticeable now.
  4. How much front to back play does an extractor have? When I first got my JSAR, it had a very rough extractor...no finger (broken) on the bottom to guide the round, a chunk or two missing from the claw, no curve for tension. It was so lose that it rattled when shaking the bolt. I think it was hand made because of all the deep machine or file marks and also didn't have the screwdriver tip on the back end. The first time I took it out was with that extractor in and was a little cranky, but it worked. I soon bought an aftermarket extractor, and that had a noticeable curve and would hold a case on the bolt when outside the gun. The next 2 range trips went well, but this after the last trip, I started have ejection issues. Case would be extracted and not ejected...then another round was stripped and would be jammed under the un-ejected case. Only way to clear it out was to pull the barrel. Now to the question...I noticed the extractor will move back into the cutout in the bolt when chambering a round and will be pulled forward in the bolt when starting its extract/ejection cycle. It seems to lose its grip on the case and "drops" it in the receiver. What size is the hole in the extractor supposed to be? Can it be shimmed? Obviously that hole is what the plunger in the handle goes through and locks into the bolt body.
  5. mmmmmmm nice!
  6. Noticed it over on the FAL Files and now it's been listed on GB... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=396468848
  7. The wood is in nice shape.
  8. Count em folks...18 Johnsons up for grabs. Also spotted 1, maybe 2 barrels. Hope someone here can get there and bid!! http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/auctionview.cgi?lid=1947938 and items being auctioned http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/photopanel.cgi?listingid=1947938&category=0&zip=&kwd=
  9. How tight should the screws holding the hand guard and stock on be? Was thinking about taking it the range soon and didn't want to split the wood or have them falling off.
  10. Same here Gman, I don't leave them tight when I store it. I have thought of using loctite, but it probably wouldn't even be set up by the time I was ready to go. I never know what's going to the range because I have sooo many to choose from.
  11. Yes, the wood is compressed a little. I thought had them snugged pretty good the last couple times, but they still were loose by the time I was done. They do have all the correct lock washers, so I'll go a wee bit tighter. Thanks!
  12. I have the same issue on my spare handguard. The nail is there, but the portion that the pin clips under is broken off.
  13. Hmmm, 3830 was mentioned in this thread http://johnsonautomatics.com/messageboard/index.php?showtopic=1875
  14. When using standard M2, what's the normal life span of the recoil spring before it would-should get changed? I know when the ejector starts leaving noticeable marks on the base is a GOOD sign to replace it.
  15. Obviously someone likes their johnson a little too much!
  16. I've used plain white lithium grease for years with no problems. While it will dry out over time (and why I store 99% of my firearms free of any lube) it can be softened up or cleaned off with a spritz of rem oil.
  17. Someone mentioned on another gun forum that his Hakim with a 10 rnd detachable mag would be allowed, even under the draconion laws in NY. All he had to do is never put more than 7 rounds in it. I believe it has to do with the age of the firearm. Since the JSAR is even older than the Hakim, I think we'll be fine, but as Mr, Johnson said above...remain calm. Editing to add this link - http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/wh_now_is_the_time_full.pdf Scroll about halfway down to page 7 and read the paragraph about Curio & Relics.
  18. Good ol' white lithium grease and hoppes oil works for me. Use the same combination on all my firearms. Since I completely clean after every trip to the range, there's no worry about the grease drying out or holding grunge.
  19. If it spins use oil, if it slides use grease...that's the general rule I've followed. Three of the places I use grease are in the bolt cam slot, the end of the link that rests in the recoil spring plunger and a very light coat on the bolt lugs. As for cleaning the stock, I used diluted BLO and after a few rub/wipe downs, that beautiful red-brown color came out. Finished with straight BLO and wiped off. Ends up keeping a nice patina, helps to nourish the wood and it looks well maintained.
  20. Glad to help! After I finally broke mine loose, I found it was just old grease/oil that had locked it up so tight. No rust thank goodness.
  21. Are those even real welds? Looks like someone stuck it back together with JB weld.
  22. I ended up using a FAL tool to break the mainspring tube cap loose. I just couldn't get enough leverage with a large screwdriver. http://www.milsurpst...asp?prod=TLF001 I've used mil surp ammo (70's HXP and 50's FN) as well as new commercial (Privi Partisan) and all have worked great. I think I ran some Remington-Winchester through when I first got it and it didn't like to feed the shorter bullet well. Can't give true accuracy results because all I have close is an indoor range.
  23. Great pics!! That's what I love about collecting firearms...Even the same make can have have small variations. If no one here has spares mag door springs, I found some at esarcoinc Bubakles.
