  1. I have the opportunity to purchase a upper receiver group serial# 6087, complete with bolt, carrier, rear sights, etc. The asking price is $800. The upper receiver needs either reblued or reparkerized, but is structurally sound. Is this a good deal? Thanks for any input! GregOwens
  2. I had the same issue before I knew about this site. I ended up buying the complete knob from SARCO for 200 bucks, and switched out the internals. Hope this helps....
  3. Try SARCO, or Numerich . I bought the front takedown pin from NUMERICH. Other than those two places, you are at the kindness of our fellow board members.
  4. SARCO sells the entire operating handle for 200 bucks. That's the route I went to replace my handles missing parts.
  5. On my never ending quest for JSAR parts to get mine up and running I noticed two barrels up for auction on gunbroker. One appears to be a 7.92×57 Mauser and the other is only referred to as a 30 cal. Possibly English in origin, and looking pretty sketchy. Could they be used safely? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks all.
  6. The only thing that I could make out of it is that both winning bidders appeared to be low volume purchasers on GB. They had under 10 purchases on the site. Also, the seller stated that they were "original" Johnson barrels, and some story that after the war, Johnson made these barrels for other weapons manufacturers, lol. So much disinformation out there. Buyer beware is all I have to say.
  7. Those two barrels just sold on GB for $580.00 on the 03 barrel, and $800.00 for the Mauser one. Unbelievable. Not even real JSAR barrels.
  8. Just fired my Johnson for the first time since inhereting it from my grandfather. I thank all of the board members who helped me out on the myriad of questions that I had in my search for parts. Special thanks goes to Ryche who provided me with the elusive bolt stop (no, not the bolt hold-open), lol. Ran 20 rounds of mildly hand-loaded 150 grain FMJ through her with zero stoppages and zero case malformations. I was happy just not to blow my face off! New issues: weak magazine door spring made it difficult to load the rounds, and Im guessing I need a new mainspring because my cases were launching pretty far? I guess my 11 1/2 inch spring just isn't enough. Successful day, plus the only other guy at the range was shooting at tannerite, and we blew the snot outta stuff. Thanks again all for helping me get the Johnson breathing fire again. Greg
  9. Mr. Alpert, As always, excellent advice. Thanks for answering all of my questions. Greg
  10. Mr. Alpert, What do you consider "cheap" for these "as is" barrels. I really need a replacement barrel to take the place of my chopped one. If they were blessed off by a competent gunsmith, what would their value be? I know how much Im willing to gamble, but would like your expert opinion. Thanks. Greg
  11. Joe da man!
  12. Interesting. Looks like the barrel that I have except mine is 22 inches without the compensator, and my compensator only has four cuts instead of five as shown. I don't believe Winfield's ever came with comps on them. Could be wrong though......
  13. Mr. Scott, Of the 23 rifles listed, is there a trend on their serial numbers? Are they sequential, A series, B series, etc? Thanks again. Greg Owens
  14. Great info for a newbie like me! After disassembly and cleaning, measured my mainspring and it was 11 1/2". Anyone have a replacement 12" they are willing to part with? I'd rather purchase from a fellow board member than SARCO, Numerich, etc. Thanks again! Greg
  15. Been assembling and disassembling my Johnson ever since receiving my new bolt stop from Ryche and searching for all the numerous serial numbers. Good news is the barrel and locking bushing have the same number, and it has the dagger/ IO marking so I believe it is an original? Bad news is that the barrel is threaded for a flash suppressor. I know the barrel is supposed to be 22 inches in length, but how to you measure it? Is the locking bushing included in the measurement? I'm trying to figure out if my barrel has been significantly shortened or not because mine is 22 in with the locking bushing. My last question is if an original front sight can be installed over the threaded portion of my barrel? I'm also missing the bayonet lug, but the two marks for the pins are still present. Thanks in advance for any advice. Greg
  16. And here is the reason I'm not too worried if the front sight cannot be replaced...top of receiver ground flat to accept scope base. It currently has a Weaver K4 and vintage rings on it, so it is accurate to what my grand-dad had on it in the 50's or 60's when he was using it to blast deer and Elk in Montana. Greg
  17. Here it is.....any idea if this is a Winfield mod, or just some bubba? Also, can the original front sight and lug be reattached? Thanks. Greg
  18. How do you post pictures? My threaded barrel does have a flash suppressor, but it is very narrow and light so I doubt it would affect cycling. There is no "step" in the barrel as far as I can see near the slots for the bayonet lug pins, so I don't know what's going on. Pictures speak a thousand words, so I will work on that. At least the interior of the barrel appears pristine, so I'm happy about that, and Mr. Joseph Scott is looking for my last missing part in his parts bin. Greg
  19. Hello all. I'm new to this site, but proudly inhereted my Johnson from my grandfather. I've fired the weapon about 35 years ago, but since disassembly today, I've noticed some missing parts: 1. Bolt stop. 2. Pin that holds the buttstock to the receiver. 3. Internal pin in the charging handle that snaps into the extractor. I've ordered the stock pin and another extractor from Numerich gun parts but cannot seem to find a bolt stop. Is it a necessary part? The johnson is an A series weapon, and was used as a deer rifle for many years in montana. Unfortunately it has been blued, the sight base ground off and tapped for a scope, and the barrel threaded along with a flash suppressor looking thing. Also the bolt and magazine cover have been machined with some diamond pattern. Does anyone on this site sell parts that I need to get this rifle running proper again? Thanks! GregOwens
  20. Received my bolt stop (not bolt hold open) yesterday and installed it. Happy days!!!! Thanks to Ryche_me for all his help.
  21. Today is my birthday, and I cannot think of a better gift then someone actually offering to help me out. Thanks again to all of the forum members for your help! You guys are a great group. I'm glad to be a part of the JSAR family. Greg Owens US Army, Retired
  22. ArtR, Bolt stop, not bolt catch, lol. Finally, I get the answer I need! I'm glad I disassembled the rifle before firing it! Now the pain begins...finding a replacement part. Thanks for the info. GregOwens
  23. Can anyone answer my question about the bolt stop being a necessary part to safely fire the weapon? Thanks in advance!
  24. Thank you!
