What US military actually used the M1941 LMG in WWII

3 posts in this topic

In reading, I have come across pretty vague accounts of exact units that used the Johnson 1941 LMG. I would like to know the actual units that used them and where. Did the US army use them? Which airborne units or companies? Which battles? I know the Marines did but even those accounts are not super detailed. Maybe I just have not found the right archives yet.

I am wanting to display one with a mannequin in proper uniform. Any scholarly help will be greatly appreciated.

In reference to usage of the '41 JLMG, this is discussed in the book "Johnson's Rifles and machine Guns" by Canfield, Lamoreaux & Johnson, published by Mowbray initially in 2002 with 2nd printing in 2006. Yes, the JLMGs were used by the USMC in the Pacific and Special Forces in Europe during WWII. The most recent specific info on usage is described in Bruce Canfield's latest work, "U.S. Small Arms of World War II" which just came out. Both books are well worth buying, having and reading.

I have noted multiple books covering various uniforms. I also found toymakers had made small mannequin models of the '41 JLMG and Rifle and I have one myself which is a figure in a box showing a "Special Force Man" in rain poncho with a colt .45 semi-auto pistol and a '41 JLMG.

To my personal knowledge, neither the JLMG or Rifle were used by Army units per se. However, certain aspects of the JLMG design, especially the overall styling and rotating bolt design, can be seen in newer weapons such as the AR- 10, AR- 15 and M-16.

Hope this info will help you find what you're looking for. Incidentally, your above entry posted no less than 3 times, for some reason.  ej

Ed is correct.  M1941 Johnson Light Machine Guns were used by U.S. Marine Corps Parachute units and some Raider Battalions as well as the U.S. Army's Joint American/Canadian First Special Service Force.
