Nightmare - Looks like FedEx lost my stock

16 posts in this topic

I boxed up my stock to send to a specialist to repair a crack and do some finish matching.  I chose FedEx because I've always had the best experience with them....anyway, I dropped the stock off Monday and it was supposed to be delivered Wednesday.  Tracking still shows that it arrived at their distro center (first stop) and that's it.  I called yesterday and they have opened an investigation.  I insured the package but not enough to purchase unobtanium.  so, a few things:

  1. Cross your fingers for me
  2. Buy the right insurance amount
  3. If you see a stock set suddenly enter the market, it might be mine so let me know
  4. Anyone got a lead on a replacement set?

Hopefully FedEx will find it and deliver but I'm really pissed at them and myself right now

Mr. "Rarecat"  ......

You do have my personal sympathy. Back in the '60's, we had two customers who shipped .30 M1 Carbines to us for conversion to 5.7mm Spitfire. I was pretty certain both got stolen by (name withheld) shipping employees which could never be proved. This gave us a reputation "black eye" for not being able to recover or otherwise rectify either problem before we closed the Johnson Arms company.

I'm not saying...yet...that your stock was stolen by shipping company employees, but if it looks like a gun package,...... etc.etc.

In recent years, as a civilian, I've had consistently good performance sending and receiving guns and even stocks & parts using the Dealer "FFL to FFL" method of shipping where necessary. People seem to respect those packages.

In any case, I hope you are successful.....  Ed J

Thank you Ed,  I really hope this is just a "Covid" glitch....

Frank,

I've had a couple of things temporarily misplaced by delivery services and it's very frustrating. On the occasions I've experienced, the packages "appeared" once questions began to be asked. Let's hope your's will show up too. The quicker you act and the more noise you make about it, the better your chance of recovery. I also had one package that the tracking number showed it got shipped from the seller directly back to the seller....but it showed up at my house a day later? The tracking number stayed the same but with no update, so what the heck happened? I suspect an internal error with no employee wanting to accept responsibility for the goof!

If the package is really gone, don't despair yet. I've been working on "re-militarizing" a  Winfield stock and forearm. The reshaping of both the rear stock and forearm turned out well and the stain is drying as we speak. Currently the rear stock is populated with all the metal including the sear block and trigger assembly....technically ready to slide back on a rifle and shoot.

I may offer it "For sale" with all the parts attached: Butt plate, recoil check bars and screws, trigger guard and complete sear block/trigger/hammer group, as well as the recoil tube with spring/follower/and buffer cap with new spring.

Or I can remove some of the parts and sell the stock and forearm stripped. Keep me posted on your situation. I intend to notify the Johnson Message Board group when the finish is dry and complete.

Mike

If it is of any consolation, I have had numerous packages lately that 'seem to stop dead in their tracks' in the shipping pipeline, only to suddenly reappear and get delivered. While COVID is now a bit less of a problem, I do know that our local UPS driver states that he is busy as ever, as people have 'taken to shopping from home' and there seems to be no end to it. One 'vendors' fast free delivery seems to have dropped or been reduced in service.

Art is certainly right. I left Vietnam in August of 1970. Just before leaving I had shipped home a couple of large Oriental paintings. They showed up at my home in the USA almost exactly one year later.

I remain hopefully that FedEx will deliver but have also started to explore my recovery options. To make it just a little worse, I included my butt plate with the stock for fitting. I found Murrays Gun Stocks who makes replacement stocks and there is a Winfield stock on GB.  I'm not opposed to building it back as a Winfield but it's not my first choice of course.

@M48TANKER I appreciate the opportunity and may take you up on it.  I'm going to give FedEx a few more days before I decide to pull the trigger on my recovery plan

Also, I don't want to go "political" on this subject, but have noticed a slowdown in service from USPS, some of which has been attributed (or so claimed by local USPS employees to me personally) to actions by the newer manager of operations who was a political appointee in the last administration. However, this should not have had any relation to problems with UPS or Fedex, unless the sudden increase in business transferred to them (because of ESPS service slowdown) caught them shorthanded.  Ed J

72 hours since I opened the investigation and 6 plus days since trusting them with the package.  Zero updates or communication from FedEx. The anger is building

I have just received a report from a friend who states Fedex is screwing up a package that he should have received several days ago. In tracking, he finds that the package is being bounced around to different Fedex offices. I am now wondering if the Fedex computer system might have software issues as I've heard similar complaints.  Ed J

Called FedEx this morning to rant and rave.  Zero information or help.   I'm going to give them to the end of the week and then decide on a course of action regarding replacement.

I'm an excitable boy, especially when I'm dealing with something valuable that I can't replace....but that's just me.

Wouldn't you know, like magic the box suddenly appears and might get delivered today.   Maybe it was the ranting and raving, maybe it fell off a conveyer belt and someone put it back on a week later or maybe the truck broke down.

Fire drill cancelled, fix bayonets and carry on...

As I said previously, I have had items 'seem to stop dead in their tracks' only to reappear several weeks later and are delivered....I had one item, ship from PA to VT, and when it finally arrived a full tracking trace showed that it had traveled from PA to CT to VA to FL to PA to NH to VT...bizarre for sure, but it seems to be the 'norm' now days... .not that any of the shipping carriers would want to admit

Rarecat,

I'm glad to hear that your package finally surfaced. I, personally, will think twice about how much insurance I put on future packages. In the past I've under insured most all shipments, in favor of reducing cost...but no more!

I and my daughter have had various packages shipped through FedEx that somehow got to go in circles or to Hawaii. Some that were coming from the east coast have been stuck in Portland Oregon for a couple days too. Seems to be the norm for FedEx now.
