Repair of flat-top sporter?

4 posts in this topic

Someone has a sporter that top of receiver has been milled flat removing dovetail. A commercial peep sight is welded on rear left. I have never tried to restore such a flat-top. I envision sweating and screwing on a dovetail. Has anyone made such a repair? Alternate is to sell gun to someone to make semi-LMG as they don't have dovetails. Suggestions?

I would either leave it as is or sell it off to someone who wants to make a

receiver for a 41 LMG look-a-like. Fit a type 2 LMG sight base (type 1 fits into the dove tail) and no one will ever know. I have 2 done that way.

I don't know if you can do this with the Johnson reciever, but I've worked in machine shops where we would wield the area up and then cnc it to shape. Is that possible? probably would not cost much, but you would have to have a pro do the work and another pro heat treat the reciever afterwords ( I think) to bring it back to a safe level of hardness equally over the entire reciever area.

Just a guess.
