    Mr. Alpert,

     

    I saw a post on this site where you spoke to another member about converting a 1st pattern 303 Dror into a replica Johnson lmg. I am wanting to do that as well as I can most likely not afford an original Johnson at this time. I was wanting to ask if you knew of any parts kits for a Dror that were for sale or if you had any suggestions that would be a better way of getting a Johnson display lmg. I am a WWII reenactor and historian who portrays the 1st SSF and we do not have even a display Johnson so I am wanting to get one that is as historically accurate as possible.            41 LMG look-a-likes are made by adapting a LMG parts set to a modified JSAR receiver and removing the full auto parts.  It is a not uncommon conversion.  Most were made in California 25 or 30 years ago when Interarms brought in 41 LMGs which ended up being cut up and sold as parts sets.  Since that time, a number of us have "copied" their conversions and built others.  It costs around $2000 for a modified receiver with type 2 (integral) sight base to make a parts set functional as a semi.  The complete 41 LMG Look-a-like goes for anywhere from $7-12K depending on condition, presence and type of bipod, etc.  Pictures is a Look-a-like with a type 1 sight base and BAR type bipod.

    I am interested in the semi auto conversion, do you have an estimate on costs ?  The receiver that was cut is from

    a 1941 Johnson rifle. It was cut thru the rear sight dovetail,so I will need a ejector assembly and locking cam and

    roller assembly. The firing pin was also cut, other than those items I think it is complete. I do have the rear sight.

      Should not be a problem to weld it.  Take some pictures and send them and I will take them to my gunsmith and see how much he wants to do the job.  He is an experienced welder, machinist and builder of LMG look-a-likes but he is painfully slow as it is a sideline.

      Bob,

           If it was a working JLMG and is so marked, welding it back together is illegal unless it was registered in the 1986 amnesty.  If you have the registration papers from the amnesty, you can apply to the ATF for the appropriate permit to restore it.  If you want to restore it as a semi auto, use a modified JSAR receiver.  This is acceptable to the ATF.  Even welding together an unregistered  MG receiver is illegal.

      Trying to make a 303 1st model Dror look like a 41 Johnson LMG doesn't work very well, assuming you could find a 303 Dror parts set.  I saw one once where they butchered the magazine support assembly to accept a 30-06 magazine and removed the fiber hand guard on the bbl.  It still looked like a Dror.  Bite the bullet and plan to spend $6500 and up for a 41 LMG look a like.

    I heard from some collectors that you are the guy to talk to about Johnsons.   I have been trying to get a fair one, and will be looking at one next month.    There is an unusual Johnson up for bid.  http://www.gunbroker.com/item/632255494

      That was a 41 LMG look-a-like.  A LMG parts set assembled on a modified semi-auto receiver.  The rear sight was not correct as it was made from a rifle leaf and a leg body.

      The price was good.  These usually go for $8000-10000

      I have bolt catches but I have no assurance that one would work in your rifle.  They were individually fitted and are still a mystery to me.

     Hi Brian my name is Jason and I'm new to the Johnson automatic website.  I recently acquired a Johnson and I'm looking for a bayonet and a  butt stock.  I'm not having much luck on the band outside could you point me in the right direction

      JSAR bayonets are occasionally seen on Ebay and Gunbroker.  Mention on this site that you are interested and someone may contact you.  As to the butt stock, originals are impossible to find in decent, usable shape.  In fact, in almost 20 years collecting and dealing in JSARs, I have yet to see an original for sale that I would use.  The best repro stocks are by Joseph Scott jmscottparts@gmail.com  His are really "drop in"..Those of others have to be fitted and may not work.
